What Are You Inviting Back In?
I had a client once who needed a house healing. She had some really dark ghosts invading her home. It was so bad that I actually had a priest who was trained in exorcisms bless both salt and create holy water for me, to aid in the clearing and removal.
After doing the healing, the house was incredible. The energy was calm, and I could see that while most of the ghosts went into the light, a few remained but were held back by the perimeter we had set.
Flash forward to 8 months after the healing, and this person tells me that everything is back in the house. Which was very confusing because we got rid of it.
And then I realized something and I asked her, "Did you invite them back in?"
She sheepishly admitted that yes, she did invite them back because she was lonely. Which was both heartbreaking and understandable.
Even though these visitors were causing her tremendous stress, at least she had company. She had gotten so used to them that she missed them in the silence of their absence.
Why do I tell this story today?
If there's something that's causing you stress in your reality that you've been working to overcome and yet it’s not shifting, look at whether there's a part of you that desires it the way it is in order to get something.
I’ve talked about negative payoffs before. While I know that phrase sometimes turns people off and they instantly shy away from really diving into the issue, let's look at it with tremendous compassion, like I did with my client.
Is there a part of you that maybe doesn't want to heal things because of the community you formed with other people who have the same issue? Or maybe there's some attention you get from said issue? Or maybe on some level it keeps you safe because it's familiar?
That last question dives into nervous system territory, but you can also look at it from an energetic perspective. Feeling like you belong, feeling like you're heard, feeling like you're not alone, avoiding further perceived pain – those are big motivators.
The key is to find what your deep inner motivation is and what you're getting from the situation, even if it’s “negative,” so that ultimately you can change it.
That’s where your power lies: in your willingness to look at and acknowledge the deeper truth.
And I get it- sometimes issues are in layers, and it takes time. Bodies especially can take time to heal. However, excavating any hidden payoffs can help the process along.
If you're working with someone to help you with your issue, they can offer brilliant assistance, like I did in that house healing, but ultimately it's up to you to receive it and decide what you do next.
So, when faced with a stuck issue, ask yourself, “Is there any part of me that’s still inviting this back in?” Then listen with love.
You have the power to choose differently. You get to decide what’s welcome in your house.
